Kyras was the son of an absentee elven father and his loving human mother. When he was only twelve years old, a group of paladins passed through his village, and he determined (with youthful certainty) that he would be just like them when he grew up.

Life has a funny way of working out.

When he was twenty, he set off with a small bag of food to find those same paladins. He reached their tower with the last of his food, and he asked to join them.

They refused.

Dispirited and without food, Kyras started walking in a random direction, not particularly caring where he ended up. He ended up in a strange camp, with a singe man who had just hunted and killed a particularly large boar. The man offered to share the feast with Kyras, who gratefully accepted. The two of them got to talking, and Kyras confessed his desire to be a paladin to this strange man. The man appeared thoughtful for a while, then looked Kyras in the eye and simply said that anyone who didn’t want him as their brother-in-arms was a fool. Kyras was very happy to hear this. The man offered to teach Kyras how to hunt, and when Kyras asked him why, he said that Kyras would need this skill to reach the Fortress of Erastil, some three hundred miles away.
